e-try works well with default browser settings.  It works with Windows95, Windows98, Windows NT v.4, and Windows 2000.  It works with Netscape Navigator versions 3.x and 4.x, Internet Explorer versions 3.x, 4.x, and 5.x, and AOL versions 3, 4, and 5.   If you are experiencing problems with this site or the e-try software, please read the support tips on this page.

q How do I download and install e-try?
a There are two ways to install the e-try viewer software: automatic and manual.

Automatic installation:

If you have one of the following browsers, the e-try viewer software will download and install automatically when you go to any page containing a specific product.  As it downloads, you will be asked if it is OK to install the software. If you agree, the installation will proceed automatically.  The browsers that support automatic installation are:

  • Internet Explorer versions 4.x and 5.x
  • Internet Explorer  versions 3.x with Authenticode 2
  • AOL versions 5.x, 4.x and most 3.x
  • Netscape Navigator versions 4.06 and above.
Manual installation:

If you do not have one of the browsers listed above, or if you need an updated version of the e-try viewer software, go to the download page, and follow the instructions.

q I installed e-try, but the page still says "You need to download and run the e-try setup application first".   What's wrong?
a There are several reasons that this might occur:

      In Netscape:

If you manually downloaded the e-try install file (etrynps.exe or etrynpd.exe), you must run the file manually to install e-try.   Find the file on your disk, and double-click on it to run it.  If you don't know where the file is, click on 'Start' in the lower left of your screen, select 'Find' - 'Files or Folders', and type etrynps.exe or etrynpd.exe in the 'Named:' field.  Once you find the file, run it.
If you have not restarted Netscape since installing e-try, exit Netscape and restart it.
The e-try installation program places the e-try plug-in in the correct directory for the most recently installed version of Netscape.  If you have more than one version of Netscape installed on your computer, you may be running a different version than the one with the e-try plug-in.  You can manually copy the plug-in to your browser directory as follows:
- Find the file npetry.dll on your hard disk:  go to "Start", "Find", "Files or Folders", and type npetry.dll in the "Named:" box.
- Find your Netscape executable file (netscape.exe).  There is a folder in the same location called "Plugins".  Copy the files npetry.dll and npetrydl.dll to the "Plugins" folder.  If you aren't sure which Netscape executable you are using, copy the files to all of the Plugins folders for all versions of Netscape that are installed on your computer.

     In Internet Explorer and AOL:

button_blue.gif (185 bytes) The e-try application does not work with AOL under WindowsNT or Windows 2000, although it does work with AOL under Windows95 and Windows98.  The version of AOL for WindowsNT and Windows 2000 does not support ActiveX objects. e-try requires ActiveX support.
When downloading manually, you may have selected to save the file to disk, rather than opening it or running it.  If so, you now need to run the installation file. Find the file 'etryies.exe' or 'etryiesu.exe' on your disk, and double-click on it to run it.  If you don't know where the file is, click on 'Start' in the lower left of your screen, select 'Find' - 'Files or Folders', and type etryies.exe or etryiesu.exe in the 'Named:' field.  Once you find the file, run it.
e-try.com places a "cookie" (note) on your PC to indicate that you have downloaded the e-try software.  For some reason, your browser can't find this cookie.  To store the cookie without downloading again:
- Be sure that cookies are turned on in the options (preferences) for your browser.
- Go to the download page, and click on the hyperlink to begin downloading.  Immediately cancel the download.  This will store the cookie on your PC.

q Every time I try to install e-try, I receive a message that the installation failed.  What's wrong?
a e-try is installed on the system disk.  For security reasons, some computers are set up to prevent installations on the system disk.  To get around this problem, use Internet Explorer, and perform a manual installation.  e-try will realized that it can't install itself on the system disk, and will ask you where you would like to install it.  Provide a location where you know that you can write files.

q I receive the error message "Unexpected file format" and then e-try terminates.  What's wrong?
